Two CQE researchers named 2022 AAAS Fellows

Philippe Guyot-Sionnest from the University of Chicago and James Eckstein from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign have been recognized for their achievements in science

Philippe Guyot-Sionnest from the University of Chicago and James Eckstein from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) were honored this year for their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science and its applications.

According to the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), AAAS Fellows are a distinguished cadre of scientists, engineers and innovators who have been recognized for their achievements across disciplines, from research, teaching, and technology, to administration in academia, industry and government, to excellence in communicating and interpreting science to the public.

James Eckstein, a professor in condensed matter physics at UIUC, is widely recognized as one of the pioneers in the development of techniques for growing high-quality oxide thin films for the investigation of fundamental properties of cuprate superconductors and oxide magnetic materials. His development of atomic layer-by-layer molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) has enabled research on oxide films at new levels of precision and sophistication.

Philippe Guyot-Sionnest, professor appointed jointly in the departments of physics and chemistry, explores nanoparticles and their optical properties, including shell quantum dots, intraband quantum dot spectroscopy, and electronic doping and ligand exchange strategies that impart ohmic electrical conductivity to films of quantum dots.
