Sivananthan Laboratories, a company that aims to drive innovation in the Illinois region by fostering high-tech research and development, has joined the CQE as a corporate partner.

“Sivananthan Laboratories shares our commitment to fostering important research and promoting economic growth by bridging the gap between academia and industry,” said David Awschalom, the Liew Family Professor in Molecular Engineering and Physics at the University of Chicago and the director of the Chicago Quantum Exchange. “We look forward to working with them to commercialize cutting-edge research as we strengthen collaboration throughout our ecosystem.”

Among Sivananthan Laboratories’ areas of focus has been in the development and commercialization of intelligent infrared sensors and imagers, including entangled photon sources and detectors. Joining the CQE represents “another step forward” for those efforts, said Dr. Siva Sivananthan, the company’s founder and chairman of the board.

“The fast-emerging field of quantum information science promises many orders of magnitude enhancements in imaging, sensing, computing, metrology, and communication, in addition to offering exciting opportunities to further understand fundamental physics,” said Sivananthan, a pioneer of epitaxial HgCdTe infrared technology. “An efficient source of entangled photons such as the one developed by Sivananthan Laboratories will have immediate applications including secure communication, quantum imaging, metrology and others.”

The CQE connects leading universities, national labs, and industry partners to advance the science and engineering of quantum information, train the future quantum workforce, and drive the quantum economy. It is based at the University of Chicago and is anchored by the US Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Northwestern University, and Purdue University. The CQE also includes more than 50 corporate, international, nonprofit, and regional partners.
