Matthew Zajac, a research development professional who has managed large-scale initiatives related to interdisciplinary academic research and economic development, joined the Chicago Quantum Exchange today as the director of operations and strategic engagement for The Bloch Quantum Tech Hub.
The CQE-led Bloch Quantum is a US Economic Development Administration–designated Tech Hub that has raised nearly $55 million to build the nation a quantum supply chain.
The multisector project, which earned a $30 million EDA award that was announced in July, leverages the Midwest’s existing manufacturing capacity, talent, and industry base to overcome a major hurdle to US quantum growth — a reliance on foreign imports that slows innovation, creates security risks, and raises production costs. That award unlocked additional public and private sector commitments.
Zajac, who has a PhD in chemistry from the University of Chicago, served most recently as the assistant director of research development at University of Chicago.
Reporting to Jean-Luc Cambier, The Bloch’s Regional Innovation Officer, Zajac will manage The Bloch’s day-to-day operations, including for the two component projects led by the CQE.
The Bloch includes four interconnected projects, which are:
- Transitioning Midwest quantum companies to scaled manufacturing by providing tools and resources, including a shared quantum sensing testbed at Purdue Northwest, automation software through Infleqtion, and technical assistance funds. This project, led by the CQE, is called Qreate.
- Providing existing manufacturers with the tools, expertise, and customer relationships to become part of a scaled domestic quantum supply chain. This project, led by the Illinois Manufacturing Excellence Center (IMEC), is called Qapacity.
- Strengthening security for US quantum technologies and mobilizing a projected $300 million in additional investments. This project, led by the CQE, is called AQtivate.
- Building a facility at the Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park that will bring key players together, giving suppliers access to customers. This project, led by the IQMP, is called The FaQtory.
