Quantum error correction is essential to realizing quantum computers, but comes with significant resource overheads. It is therefore of interest to examine physical systems in which qubits can be stored redundantly and error-corrected in situ, for which quantum harmonic oscillators have played a prominent role. I will describe a range of approaches to performing quantum computation in bosonic modes realized in the motion of trapped ions. In the linear regime of ion-motion coupling using light, we have realized GKP codes, which encode information across a discrete lattice of points in phase space. Our experiments have demonstrated creation and full control of single qubits, as well as autonomous error correction over hundreds of correction cycle. I will also describe ideas in which we try to utilise non-linear terms in the laser-ion interaction to realize multi-component cat states which can be used to store and protect quantum information.
