Title:
Discovery and control of quantum states in transition metal oxides and chalcogenides
Description:

Transitional metal oxides and chalcogenides are rich in physics and pose profound intellectual challenges chiefly because of an extraordinarily interplay of fundamental energies, such as Coulomb and spin-orbit interactions, electric crystal fields, etc. Discovering and understanding new emergent states and establishing controls over them are of both fundamental and technological importance. This seminar presents systematic studies of two exemplary quantum materials: (1) The discovery of chiral-orbital-current (COC) states in an unconventional colossal magnetoresistance material Mn3Si2Te6, and the control of the COC state with small external DC currents; (2) The universal heavy spin Fermi surface in the 4d-trimer compounds Ba4Nb1-xRu3+xO12 that host both Planckian strange metal and quantum spin liquid states throughout the entire series.
