2022 Chicago Quantum Summit: Public Event

When:
Monday, November 14, 2022 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Where:
Chicago Cultural Center, Preston Bradley Hall 78 E. Washington St., Chicago, IL, 60602
Title:
Building a Quantum Secure Future in Chicago
Description:

Please join us at the Chicago Cultural Center to talk with leaders in the community.

Quantum science and engineering has the potential to transform our everyday lives. From increasing the power and speed of computers to making a cybersecure quantum internet, these technologies will have broad impacts to our region and across the globe. As the greatest applications of quantum technologies have yet to be discovered, researchers and businesses alike are preparing for their potential benefits, as well as vulnerabilities, such as the hacking of private information.

Hear Marco Pistoia, head of global technology applied research at JPMorgan Chase, share how banks and others are harnessing the power of quantum technologies to strengthen computing, cybersecurity, and secure communications to benefit people and industries around the world. Also, join a panel discussion with Pistoia and leaders from Chicago’s quantum ecosystem as they discuss how researchers and companies are developing technologies and why building cutting-edge cybersecurity and secure communications into these plans is important for us here in Chicago.

All ages and backgrounds are welcome.

This event is sponsored by VentureWell and Duality Accelerator.

Speakers:

  • Marco Pistoia, Managing Director, Distinguished Engineer, and Head of JPMorgan Chase's Global Technology Applied Research Center, JPMorgan Chase & Co.
  • Mirella Koleva, CEO & Co-founder, Quantopticon

Speaker Bios:

  • Marco Pistoia Ph.D. is Managing Director, Distinguished Engineer, and Head of JPMorgan Chase's Global Technology Applied Research. He joined JPMorgan Chase in January 2020. Formerly, he was a Senior Manager, Distinguished Research Staff Member and Master Inventor at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in New York, where he managed an international team of researchers responsible for Quantum Computing Algorithms and Applications. He received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from New York University in 2005.  He is the inventor of over 250 patents, granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and over 300 patent-pending applications. He is also the author of over 400 scholarly papers published in international journals and conferences.
  • Mirella Koleva is the CEO and co-founder of Quantopticon, a British-American company creating the world's first design software platform for quantum photonics devices. She obtained her MSci in Physics, and MRes and PhD degrees in Photonics from Imperial College London, and has held postdoctoral positions in University of Oxford and King’s College London. In 2016, she generalised and implemented into code Quantopticon’s proprietary algorithm, which describes open quantum systems comprising an arbitrary number of energy levels, embedded in a complex electromagnetic environment. Mirella is a recipient of the 2020 David Walsh Award for outstanding teamwork and leadership. In 2021, Mirella was conferred the title 'Most Influential CEO - London, UK' and ‘CEO of the Year - United Kingdom’ by CEO Monthly Magazine, and in January 2022, she was a winner of the annual SPIE Startup Challenge competition in San Francisco for her start-up pitch to photonics industry investors.
  • David Awschalom is the Liew Family Professor and Vice Dean for Research of the Pritzker School for Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago, a Senior Scientist at Argonne National Laboratory, and Founding Director of the Chicago Quantum Exchange. He is also the inaugural Director of Q-NEXT, one of the US DOE Quantum Information Science Research Centers. Before arriving in Chicago, he was the Director of the California NanoSystems Institute and Professor of Physics, Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California – Santa Barbara. Earlier, he served as a research staff member and manager at the IBM Watson Research Center. He works in the emerging fields of spintronics and quantum information engineering, where he develops methods to explore and control the behavior of individual electrons, nuclei, and photons in semiconductors and molecules. His research includes implementations of information processing with potential applications in quantum computing, communication, and sensing.
  • Jeanne Whalen is The Washington Post's global business reporter, focusing on technology, manufacturing and U.S. competitiveness. She joined The Post in 2018, after 19 years at The Wall Street Journal, where she reported from New York, London and Moscow. She has also written for the Financial Times and the Moscow Times.
