The key tool that will enable progress from the noisy intermediate scale quantum (NISQ) era of quantum computing to the fault-tolerant era is quantum error correction (QEC). Accordingly, QEC development is driving the next generation of quantum computers, which will rely on tightly integrated advances in both hardware and software. This workshop will give a hands-on introduction to QEC.
Using interactive experiments running on cloud-based IQM quantum computers, we will explore concrete examples that demonstrate the basic goals, concepts, and challenges of QEC. We will build up to implementing some error detecting codes on real quantum hardware, including the so-called [[4,2,2]] and iceberg codes. Time permitting, we will also see how to use Qrisp's built-in functions to run a quantum memory experiment for a true error-correcting code, the surface code.
